mic feedback on our Huddersfield performance //
5 star review of the Jürg Frey / Magnus Granberg concert at Huddersfield in the Financial Times of all places (by Josh Spero):
“…The festival’s final afternoon featured work that reminded me of Oliveros but was far more refreshing. Magnus Granberg and Jürg Frey both took inspiration from early music, atomising pieces by Byrd and Ockeghem respectively, but producing radical results. In Granberg’s How Vain Are All our Frail Delights? (2017), the players of the Ensemble Grizzana set off along separate paths, interpreting gobbets of musical material in their own way. Emerging into a 40-minute crystalline silence were rustles from the zither, electronically magnified breaths from the flautist, a gentle buffing of the cello strings. For the second time that weekend, there were tuned glasses of water.
In Frey’s Late Silence (2017), the ensemble pulled simple, quiet two-note phrases from the hush, calling and replying to one another, leading and holding back, before warm harmonies emerged as several instruments took up a single note and let it fade away. Despite the sparseness of the material, it felt purposeful and secure, in contrast with Oliveros’s fussy obfuscation. The result was meditative, questioning, universal, spiritual. It actually sounded like fragments echoing down the centuries. ★★★★★ ”

mic “The musicians of Ensemble Grizzana are arranged in the usual way for their concert at St Paul’s Hall in Huddersfield. Another player, the percussionist Dimitra Lazaridou Chatzigoga, sits among them. The table beside her holds a small and rather beaten-up zither and a tray of the kind of objects you might find at the back of a spare kitchen drawer: two filter baskets from stove-top espresso machines, a tea-strainer, letter opener, a cog, a nut and bolt…”

May 2014:
BEFOREHAND – Live at Hundred Years Gallery (ccs 28)

Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga: zither
Mark Wastell: electronics, bowls, shruti box

BEFOREHAND formed exclusively for the an appearance at the launch concert for Angharad Davies’ ‘Six Studies’ release on Confront. That debut concert performance was recorded and, following a long standing ritual at Confront, was subsequently released for public consumption and critique.

No rehearsal beforehand(!), straight into the music. Dimitra played with one functioning arm, the other strapped up due to a broken elbow. Mark played his electronics set-up, last used at a show with Keith Rowe in Dublin in 2006. Eight years in a case never touched.

Potential to fail? Possibly. Did it?

Info here.

January 01, 2014

Lovely start of New Year ::
my project-composition ‘Mobile #2 OR odds ratio’ has just been completed – all parts together and in place and it is such a joy to my ears!
With Nate Wooley, Cremaster (Alfredo Costa Monteiro & Ferran Fages), Xavier Charles, Enrico Malatesta and Christian Weber!

Simon Reynell, of another timbre, asked me five months ago to coordinate a project, which I took on as a great opportunity to work with the above musicians, living around the world, but being somehow linked in my mind.
A challenge worth the effort, I say now!

‘Mobile #2 OR odds ratio’ is a modular composition, inspired by Alexander Calder mobiles. Flow and stillness, moving parts, instructions, balance and probabilities on a kinetic structure.

I hope you’ll want to have a listen now…but you’ll just have to wait for a bit more..this is the heads up on an exciting 2014!

Thank you, Nate, Alfredo, Ferran, Xavier, Enrico and Christian!

Happy New Ears, everybody!
